When choosing and manufacturing a system for starting and monitoring motors, safety and reliabil- ity are important considerations. Motor starting is a particularly critical phase for the motor itself and for the installation powering it. Even rated service needs to be adequately moni- tored and protected in order to deal with any faults that might occur. When it comes to direct starting, ABB SACE offers two different solutions: • a conventional system equipped with a cir- cuit-breaker with a magnetic only trip unit for protection against shortcircuits, a thermal trip unit for protection against overloads and phase failure or unbalance, and a contactor to operate the motor; • an advanced protection system which integrates all the protection and monitoring functions in the circuit-breaker itself and a contactor for operat- ing the motor.
